Maasdijk between Cuijk and Ravenstein safe and attractive

For more than two years we worked together with WSP and the Aa and Maas Water Board on a plan for improving the Maasdijk between Cuijk and Ravenstein. Our design aims to improve the dyke as well as enhancing the quality of the landscape and nature. We will also improve the potential for recreation.

In determining the preferred alternative for the dyke improvement, the water board has opted for a qualitative impulse to the area, making it an attractive and recognisable dyke with many views, fitting into the varied landscape through which the river winds.

In the exploration we have elaborated various directions for solutions to improve the dyke with regard to safety and the local conditions. The various dyke profiles we designed and which are incorporated in the preferred alternative form a beautiful and coherent whole. For the fortified city of Grave, a part of the southern water line, we looked into how the dyke can provide an impulse to the quality of the Maaskade. We used the past as a source of inspiration for the future, so instead of a high wall blocking the view, we designed a stepped green quay, for which SmitsRinsma conducted the calculations.

An important part of the plan is the number of opportunities for linkages. For instance, we investigated how parts of Bastion Blauwkop – the old fortification in Grave – can be restored once the dyke is reinforced. Where possible, these opportunities for linkage will be elaborated at a later stage. There are opportunities for a continuous cycle lane on the dyke, pedestrian routes from the dyke to the surroundings, and the creation of special resting places.

In the design process we worked together with residents, landowners, nature conservation associations, recreation agents and local partners such as local authorities. The elaboration stage will probably be ready by the middle of 2025. Residents and businesses remain actively involved during this phase on what the dyke improvement in front of their front door will look like. This stage will be followed by the implementation, which is expected to be completed in 2028.
