Hengelose Es-North

As a result of restructuring, Hengelose Es North is becoming a new vital part of the district with a mixture of 184 dwellings (private sector) in total, of which 70 for the social target group of the Welbions housing corporation. Strootman and IAA architecten have drawn up an urban design plan for this.

The planning zone borders on the Weusthagpark: a pedestrian area on the outskirts of Hengelo with beautiful old trees. Our design transforms the hard boundary between the residential district and green area to one in which red and green are interwoven; from living next to the park to living in the park. Between the dwellings there are opportunities to create green transitions between the park and its surroundings with a recreational and ecological value. Instead of the present introverted design with cul-de-sacs, we make the new neighbourhood fordable and open in order to become a link connecting the park with the city and to bring the landscape into the city. Some of the existing medium high-rise buildings are maintained and drastically renovated to form some 150 attractive apartments with a large variation in typology and ground plan.
