The City Boulevard is one of the projects that form the Florijnas in Assen. The Florijnas is a large-scale development programme to improve the accessibility of Assen and to restructure the current urban area.

The City Boulevard is the backbone of the Florijnas. It runs from the northern approach to the A28 to the N33/A28 intersection in Assen South. Practically every Florijnas project has (or will have) an address on the City Boulevard. This also applies to the possible area developments which are expected to be a result of the Florijnas. The City Boulevard will improve the flow of traffic through the city to become an easily accessible and recognisable green route.

Strootman landschapsarchitecten and Franz Ziegler have drawn up an integral vision for the City Boulevard: the total road design taking the possible area developments on both sides into account. The presence of vegetation and landscape can be felt almost all over Assen, including the centre. This is one of the city’s major qualities. The alternation between built-up environment and greenery changes with distance from the centre. While the alternation is on a small scale in the centre, its scale gradually increases towards the outskirts of the city.

We have conceived the City Boulevard as a route covering every zone from the centre to the countryside and thereby showing off the qualities of Assen at their best. The City Boulevard thus changes along with its green and valuable surroundings and has only a limited number of features that are the same over its full length: street furniture, lighting and material. The most important design assignment was the mise-en-scène of the route and a good design of the intersections.
